The eagle’s feet “walk” across the tops of the sacred letters — a playful flourish typical of the Kells artists. In Christian tradition, the eagle symbolizes St. John the Evangelist. Birds appear throughout the Book of Kells as sacred messengers and symbols of divine insight.
