The Canons are tables created in the 4th C. by Eusebius to show how the four Gospels agree or differ. In the Book of Kells, these concordances are framed in ornate arcades, turning a practical reference into a vision of sacred order. The Lion (Mark) and the Ox (Luke) are images from the arched arcade at the top of three columns.
